In the heart of Nigeria’s bustling cities and underserved rural communities, one organization is steadily rewriting the narrative of poverty, malnutrition, and limited educational opportunities. The Oladele Fajemirokun Foundation (OFF), established just four years ago, has emerged as a beacon of hope, transforming lives through targeted interventions that address the pressing challenges facing Nigerian families and children.
This documentary delves into the Foundation’s work, its vision for a brighter future, and its growing impact on Africa’s most populous nation.
At the heart of OFF’s mission lies a deep commitment to education. In October 2024, the Foundation expanded its School Feeding Program to Lagos Island Primary School, offering both nourishment and the promise of a better tomorrow to children who might otherwise go hungry. This initiative is more than just a feeding scheme—it is a lifeline for families grappling with the harsh realities of economic hardship.
For Mrs. Lawumi Fajemirokun, Executive Director of the Foundation, the program embodies the essence of sustainable change. “Education is the foundation of any society, but children cannot learn on empty stomachs. This program ensures they have the nutrition and tools they need to succeed,” she explains.
OFF’s Back-to-School initiative also provides essential supplies—school bags, sandals, and writing materials—helping to ease the financial burden on families. Such initiatives are not just about education; they are about restoring dignity and hope.
In Nigeria, the statistics are stark: one in three children under the age of five is stunted, and over two million children suffer from acute malnutrition. These figures reflect a public health crisis that OFF has courageously stepped up to address.
Through its Sustainable Malnutrition Intervention Program, the Foundation is tackling malnutrition at its root. Hundreds of vulnerable mothers have been trained on how to prepare affordable, nutritious meals for their children. Beyond that, these women are empowered with vocational skills, enabling them to create sustainable livelihoods.
One beneficiary shared her story: “The Foundation didn’t just help me feed my children; they gave me the tools to stand on my own. Today, I run a small catering business, and I can provide for my family with pride.”
The Foundation’s impact is felt far and wide. In January 2024, amid a staggering 32.84% food inflation rate in Nigeria, OFF distributed essential food packages to over 400 households in Ifewara, Osun State. These efforts were a lifeline for families struggling to put food on the table during one of the country’s most challenging economic periods.
OFF’s School Feeding Program in Akodo Local Government Primary School is another shining example. Over the past 10 months, the program has provided healthy meals to students, significantly improving attendance rates and academic performance. For many families, this initiative has been a critical source of relief, ensuring their children receive at least one nutritious meal a day.
Beyond tackling immediate needs, the Foundation is sowing seeds for the future through its Business Innovation and Talent Expression (BITE) program. In April and May 2024, this initiative brought together young entrepreneurs at the University of Lagos to showcase their business ideas. Out of over 300 entries, ten finalists competed for a ₦2 million cash prize, highlighting the potential of Nigeria’s youth to drive innovation and economic growth.
Buoyed by its success, the BITE program is set to expand into a South West regional competition, paving the way for even greater impact.
OFF’s efforts go beyond charity; they are rooted in empowerment and sustainability. Whether it’s providing meals, fostering entrepreneurship, or equipping mothers with vocational skills, the Foundation’s programs are designed to create lasting change.
As Mrs. Fajemirokun puts it: “Our vision is to build communities where no child goes hungry, no parent feels helpless, and no family is left behind. This is the future we are working toward every day.”
The work of the Oladele Fajemirokun Foundation is a reminder that change is possible when people come together for a common purpose. The Foundation invites individuals and organizations to partner with them in combating food insecurity and empowering communities.
Through partnerships, donations, and advocacy, the dream of a better Nigeria—where children are nourished, educated, and equipped for the future—can become a reality.
