Scott Dixon and Alex Palou are showing the way. Rinus VeeKay is another 1 second back. Pit stops are starting.
Alex Palou leads, followed by Scott Dixon, Rinus VeeKay, Marcus Ericsson and Ed Carpenter. Palou has led 14 laps and Dixon 6. Average speed is 217.572 mph.
Dixon passes Alex Palou on Lap 8 as the Chip Ganassi Racing teammates work together to conserve fuel. Dixon came into the race with 570 career laps led, third all-time behind Al Unser (644) and Ralph DePalma (612). Drivers hope they can go at least 30 laps before requiring a pit stop.
By completing 2 laps, the four-time race champ has completed 4,000 Indy 500 laps in his 22 starts. That’s third all-time to A.J. Foyt and Al Unser, also four-time winners.
Alex Palou passes pole sitter Scott Dixon for the lead at the end of Lap 1, and Rinus VeeKay takes 3rd place.
In pre-race interviews, several drivers emphasized that patience is crucial, especially early in the race.
Rinus VeeKay, who starts 3rd, says he wants to remain in the top 5 early, but doesn’t necessarily have to be P1. VeeKay said early aggressiveness in 2021 allowed him to lead 32 laps but cost him fuel mileage.
Tony Kanaan, the 2013 race winner who starts 6th: “You’ve got to wait for your opportunity.”
Romain Grosjean, the top qualifying rookie who starts 9th: “My main word here today is patience.”
“I’ll do a snow angel on the track,” Mario Andretti told IndyStar’s Nathan Brown on “Pit Pass Live.” Marco Andretti starts 23rd.
The drivers for Arrow McLaren SP approached their Indy 500 competitors during Saturday’s Legends Day. Here’s how the impromptu interviews went.

The 47-year-old Brazilian has a chance to stand alone atop the Indy 500 victory list. He tied A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears by winning for the fourth time in 2021.
“Indianapolis, when I’m under the most pressure, it brings out the best in me,” Castroneves told IndyStar’s Nathan Brown heading into the 2022 race.

The 2008 Indy 500 winner is this year’s favorite after his 4-lap run of 234.046 mph, the second-fastest qualifying effort in race history. His five pole starts are one behind the record established by Rick Mears.
The Dixon family cautiously celebrated the achievement. His race win came from the pole, but Emma Davies Dixon knows starting first guarantees nothing.
“I get so excited, but I’m so competitive, which goes against me a lot because I take the losses and the pain we’ve had at the 500, and it feels personal,” Davies Dixon told IndyStar. “It’s horrible to be like that.”

The transition from stock cars to the IndyCar Series hasn’t been easy for the four-time Brickyard 400 champion (the Cup Series race that used to be contested on the IMS oval). Mostly because Johnson is a relative novice to road and street courses.
But put him on an oval, and he’s plenty competitive. He qualified 12th for his first Indy 500.
“The energy here for qualifying, you can feel it building, and that’s what I witnessed last year as a spectator and loved,” Johnson said after qualifying. “And to be here involved in it as a driver is really cool.”
